Program notes:
This piece is energetic and very rhythmic. The work begins with a short rhythmic figure that becomes pervasive as other melodies and motives are layered on top of it. A second section provides some lyrical reprieve, but the rhythmic undercurrents are never too far out of sight. The middle portion of the work presents the most activity and leads to a varied recapitulation of the opening material in a different meter. The rousing coda makes use of some brass power and pyrotechnics, bringing this quirky work to an exciting conclusion.
