About
Cantos y Tumbaos is a groundbreaking new opera by composer Reinaldo Moya and librettist Adalber Salas Hernández that reimagines Dante’s Inferno within the walls of El Helicoide, a modernist architectural marvel in Caracas transformed into a notorious political prison. The work follows Florentina as she is guided by the ghost of Francisco de Miranda through the "circles" of the spiral building, encountering figures from Venezuelan history in a journey toward the heart of national memory. By masterfully fusing the sophisticated vernacular of salsa with the expressive power of contemporary opera, Cantos y Tumbaos creates a visceral sonic landscape where the rhythmic heartbeat of the tumbao meets a searing narrative of political resilience, authoritarianism, and the enduring human spirit.
