About

Guayoyo Sketches takes the listener on a rhythmic journey through a single day as experienced through the lens of Venezuelan coffee culture. Each movement is inspired by a specific time of day and the particular coffee preparation traditionally consumed at that hour. Together, these sketches offer a window into the intimate rituals of Venezuelan life—a musical "care package" for those living in the diaspora.

I. El guayoyo de la mañana (The Morning Guayoyo)

A guayoyo is a lighter, less concentrated black coffee, often prepared by "stretching" the grounds with extra water. This movement depicts the quiet, solitary process of waking up in a house that still feels asleep. As the music unfolds, the textures gain momentum and clarity, symbolizing the first sips of caffeine taking effect as the world begins to stir.

II. Guarapo de la hora del burro (Guarapo of the Donkey’s Hour)

Guarapo is black coffee sweetened with papelón (unrefined cane sugar). This movement refers to "la hora del burro"—the Venezuelan idiom for that midday slump or "2:30 feeling." The music is a gentle, quirky Venezuelan waltz. I have rhythmically skewed the traditional triple meter to capture a sense of drowsy instability, interrupted by an acrobatic Trio before the waltz returns like a fleeting afternoon memory.

III. Cerrero de medianoche (Midnight Cerrero)

A cerrero is a formidable, highly concentrated black coffee with no sweetener—used to cut through deep exhaustion. In the finale, this "bitter" brew fuels an all-night work session. The music consists of off-kilter scales and jittery, "groovy" melodies that drift in and out of focus, mimicking the hyper-alert but fragmented thoughts of a caffeine-fueled midnight adventure. The work builds to a rousing, virtuosic conclusion as the various rhythmic elements collide in one powerful, final sip.
