About
The texts for this song set are drawn from Rossy Lima’s collection Migrare Mutare, a series of poems that utilize striking animal metaphors to chart the psychological and physical journey of migration. Lima’s language captures the visceral process of shedding one country, language, and culture for another—a transformation that is as much a biological survival tactic as it is an emotional one.
The cycle follows an evolutionary arc that begins in the dark, earthy realm of Serpiente (Snake). Here, the music inhabits the shadows of Lima’s metaphors, using winding, chromatic lines to depict the "molting" of the self and the shedding of an old identity. In Mariposa the butterfly resembles the migrant's ability to fly from one "home" to another. This sense of transition carries through the set, eventually reaching a more reflective and luminous outlook in Si hay futuro (If there is a future). This concluding song pivots toward a clearer harmonic language, looking toward a possible future while maintaining the quiet weight of the journey traveled. Throughout the set, the songs aim to mirror the dual nature of Lima’s poetry: they embrace the outward beauty and rhythmic directness of her language while simultaneously penetrating the darker, more anxious subtext of her metaphors.
