About
In meteorology, a nimbostratus cloud is a vast, amorphous shroud—a multi-level expanse of uniform grey that yields steady, persistent precipitation without the dramatic release of thunder or lightning. This short work serves as a musical study of this particular atmospheric state, capturing its heavy, shadowed beauty.
The piece is defined by a sense of "constant precipitation," a shimmering percussive texture that runs through the work like a steady rainfall. To mirror the multi-layered structure of these clouds, I utilized diverse musical materials that coalesce into dense, looming masses. The atmosphere shifts between the "lithe" movement of mist and a more ominous, weighted stillness.
While the music never reaches the explosive volume of a storm, it maintains a persistent tension; the threat of a downpour is always present, hanging just out of reach in the dark, grey density of the sound.
