About
Nocturno is a song cycle that traces a temporal and metaphorical progression from late afternoon to the first light of morning. Drawing on the powerful imagery of the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío, the work embarks on a journey filled with elegiac beauty, sudden emotional shifts, and nocturnal surprises. By charting this movement from dusk into dawn, the cycle reflects the collective experience of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic—a slow, uncertain passage through darkness toward an eventual awakening.
The musical language of the cycle aims to encompass the vastness of Darío’s sensory world. It begins with distant, atmospheric murmurs that gradually coalesce into vibrant Caribbean grooves, eventually reaching points of ecstatic climax. Just as Darío’s "Nocturnos" marked the birth of Modernismo—fundamentally altering the trajectory of Latin American letters and culture—this music seeks to capture the feeling of a world coming back into existence. It is a celebration of resilience, exploring how we navigate the shadows of the night to find a renewed sense of clarity and hope in the morning light.
