About
The title Órbitas Aisladas refers to independent, cyclical motions that rotate at their own velocities. In this concerto, I explore the layering of rhythmic materials that unfold at different rates—a technique that creates a dazzling, and at times dizzying, sonic landscape.
This work represents a pivotal moment in my output; it is the first time I deliberately explored complex, constantly morphing "grooves." By setting these rhythmic processes in motion, I was able to create a world of polyrhythmic friction and momentum.
Writing my first concerto for the bass clarinet—a wonderfully versatile yet relatively rare solo instrument—was a liberating experience. Free from the daunting historical shadows of the more "standard" concerto repertoire, I felt I could build an entirely original world and simply "play" in it. The result is one of the most unabashedly energetic and "fun" pieces I have written, showcasing the bass clarinet’s incredible range, from its nimble, virtuosic "quicksilver" runs to its resonant, earthy depths.
