About
Named after the Spanish word for "jukebox," this virtuosic encore is a fast and bewildering journey through the popular musical landscape of Venezuela. The piece functions like a radio dial spinning rapidly between stations, catching fragments of merengue rucaneao from Caracas and the driving montunos of the salsa tradition—styles that defined the Venezuelan soundscape for decades.
The twist in Rocola lies in its rhythmic distortion. Each dance "wobbles" in its own unique way; as the piece unfolds, the listener discovers that the rhythms themselves are the primary subjects of development. While melodic and harmonic ideas return in familiar guises, their rhythmic profiles are constantly being altered and subverted. The result is a kaleidoscopic, funky adventure that pushes the piano’s sonic capabilities to the limit, never losing sight of the encore’s ultimate goal: to leave the audience on their feet.
