About

Commissioned in 2022 by pianist Clare Longendyke as part of a collective "Requiem for our time," this work was originally intended to address the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. However, a cruel twist of fate altered the work’s trajectory: the sudden passing of my brother, Manuel, later that summer. Left shattered and adrift, I found I no longer had the capacity to compose toward a collective narrative. The project became a personal Requiem in my brother’s honor—a direct processing of a very real and present grief.

The work is an attempt to search for meaning within the senseless. The musical discourse is characterized by a constant "reaching" toward a resolution—a longed-for answer that remains perpetually out of reach. Vaguely folk-like echoes emerge from the texture, offering brief moments of familiarity before subsiding back into the void. Because I have not yet found resolution for my own mourning, the music intentionally reflects that state of suspension.

The title is drawn from Jorge Luis Borges’s poem El laberinto (The Labyrinth). While the poem describes the Minotaur sensing an "Other" searching for him within the maze, the metaphor became a haunting parallel for my own experience. In this work, grief takes on a persona of its own—an "Other" that I can hear and sense as I navigate the emotional cul-de-sacs and labyrinthine paths brought about by loss.
