Reinaldo Moya is a composer whose music explores the complexities of identity, memory, and migration. From his early training in Venezuela’s El Sistema to the premiere of his works at Carnegie Hall, his writing seeks a balance between classical structure and the urgent, shared narratives of the Venezuelan diaspora. By integrating the rhythms and vibrancy of Latin American tradition with a modern classical language, Moya is "a composer who has much to say about the human condition in the 21st century and should be listened to often." (Bangor Daily News)

In 2025, the Washington Post named the premiere of his clarinet quartet, I Will Dance, and Dance With You, as one of the Best Classical Concerts of the Year. Critic Michael Andor Brodeur described the work as a "touching, introspective piece" that demonstrates a "profound understanding of grief," noting how in Moya's music, "themes turn into memories and come rushing back." This follows the broad success of his Piano Concerto, premiered by Joyce Yang, which has been championed by the San Diego Symphony under the baton of Rafael Payare.

Moya’s orchestral works have been performed by world-class ensembles including the Minnesota Orchestra, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, and the New Jersey Symphony. His music has been led by distinguished conductors such as Osmo Vänskä, JoAnn Falletta, and Carlos Miguel Prieto, and performed by premier chamber ensembles like the Attacca Quartet and the Jasper Quartet.

A prolific collaborator, Moya served as the Composer-in-Residence for the Chicago Philharmonic (2021–24), where he premiered major orchestral works including Polo Romanesco and Rise for cello and orchestra (with soloist Joshua Roman). His work Guayoyo Sketches was commissioned by Alisa Weilerstein for her acclaimed Fragments project, leading to performances at Carnegie Hall, Severance Hall, and the Spoleto Music Festival. His operatic works, including Tienda (with a libretto by Caitlin Vincent) and Memory Boy (with a libretto by Mark Campbell), have been commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and the Schubert Club, earning praise for their "fragile emotional arcs" and vivid characterizations.

A graduate of The Juilliard School (Master’s and Doctorate degrees) where he studied with Samuel Adler and Robert Beaser, Moya also holds an undergraduate degree from West Virginia University. As a dedicated educator, he has served on the faculties of Augsburg University, St. Olaf College and the Interlochen Arts Camp. Since 2023, he has served as Associate Professor of Composition and Music Theory at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

His excellence has been recognized with the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Aaron Copland Award, the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation Composer Award, and two McKnight Composers’ Fellowships.
